Our Approach
In too many East African construction sites, safety is a folder of documents that sits in the site office and comes out for inspections. Benchmark operates differently. Safety at Benchmark is a culture — something that every person on every site understands, practises, and is accountable for, every working day.
Our directors trained under UK Tier 1 contractors who have zero tolerance for unsafe practices. The standards those contractors apply — written RAMS before work begins, mandatory toolbox talks before each task, PPE that is actually worn rather than stored — are the standards Benchmark applies in Zanzibar.
Construction is an inherently hazardous industry. The measure of a contractor's safety culture is not whether accidents happen — it is whether the systems in place give the best possible protection against them, and whether incidents are reported honestly rather than concealed.
Our Safety Standards
Before work begins each morning, every site operative attends a toolbox talk — a structured briefing covering the day's activities, the hazards associated with them, and the controls in place. In Swahili. Every day. No exceptions.
Hard hats, hi-vis vests, safety boots, and task-appropriate PPE are provided to every Benchmark employee. PPE on a Benchmark site is not optional. Any site visitor — including clients — is expected to wear appropriate protection.
Risk Assessments and Method Statements are written before any significant construction activity commences. They are not generic — they are activity-specific, site-specific, and reviewed by the site manager and director before being put into practice.
Any safety incident — however minor — triggers an automatic alert to the site director, managing director, and the client's representative. Near-misses are reported the same way. We report everything because transparency saves lives.
Every person who sets foot on a Benchmark site — operative, visitor, or subcontractor — receives a formal site induction before they begin work. The induction covers emergency procedures, hazards, PPE requirements, and the site's specific controls.
Benchmark's safety management system is structured to align with international HSE standards. As the company grows, formal ISO 45001 certification is a stated objective — demonstrating our commitment to maintaining and improving safety standards beyond minimum compliance.
For Clients
A safe site is a productive site. The discipline required to maintain safety standards is the same discipline that maintains quality standards and programme certainty.
A contractor with proper RAMS documentation and written safety records protects you as a client from liability in the event of an incident. Benchmark's safety paperwork is your evidence that appropriate controls were in place.
Incidents stop work. Investigations take time. Unsafe sites lose programme days that are never recovered. Benchmark's safety culture is also a protection for your project timeline.
