Careers at Benchmark
Operating across Zanzibar, Pemba and mainland Tanzania — we hire locally, train deliberately, and promote from within. Graduate QS, Engineers, Project Managers and Planners welcome.
Why We Train
Benchmark's directors came home from the UK and Russia with the skills and experience to build East Africa's most demanding projects. But skills imported from abroad are finite — and they do not belong here.
That is what drives our approach to hiring and training. We believe that the next generation of construction engineers, site managers, and project directors across Tanzania should be Tanzanian. Not brought in from elsewhere. Built here, from the ground up.
Every person who joins Benchmark — from site operative to senior project manager — enters a structured progression pathway. We invest in training because we believe that the quality of the people on your site determines the quality of what gets built. And we intend to build the best.
Career Progression
Every Benchmark employee is on the pathway. Where you enter depends on your experience and qualifications. Where you go is limited only by your commitment.
Entry point for anyone new to the industry. You learn site safety, material handling, basic construction methods, and what it means to work to a programme.
Specialise in a core trade — concrete, masonry, formwork, finishing, or plant operation. Benchmark provides on-the-job training supported by structured skill assessment.
Manage a trade team, run daily toolbox talks, complete the site diary, and take ownership of your section of the programme. First management responsibility.
Technical setting-out, reading and issuing drawings, programme management, quality control, and RAMS preparation. Benchmark supports qualification at this level.
Full project management responsibility — client interface, design co-ordination, commercial management, and sub-contractor oversight. The Benchmark leadership tier.
What Benchmark Offers
We are not building a workforce for today's projects. We are building the construction professionals Zanzibar will need for the next twenty years.
You learn on live Benchmark projects, managed by experienced site teams. Every day is a training day. No classroom simulations — real work, real consequences, real skills.
Weekly toolbox talks. PPE provided on day one. RAMS documentation that you are involved in writing — not just signing. Safety is not optional at Benchmark.
Advancement at Benchmark is based on demonstrated competence — not seniority, not who you know. If you can do the job at the next level, we will put you in it.
You will learn to work to a UK Tier 1 standard. The skills and discipline you develop with Benchmark are recognised and respected internationally.
Benchmark actively prefers to hire from Zanzibar, Pemba and mainland Tanzania. We believe that the skills required to build Tanzania should be owned by Tanzanians.
We operate in Swahili and English. Technical documentation is produced in both languages. You will develop professional competence in the construction vocabulary of both.
Current Openings
We recruit on a rolling basis as projects demand. Even when specific roles are not listed, we always welcome speculative applications from motivated individuals who want to build their career with Benchmark.
We are looking for a Graduate QS to join our commercial team. You will be involved in BOQ preparation, procurement, valuations, subcontractor management and final account — across a live portfolio of government and residential projects. BSc Quantity Surveying or equivalent. Tanzanian graduates strongly preferred.
Engineering graduates who want to develop on real projects under internationally experienced directors. Setting-out, drawing management, programme coordination and QA from day one. BSc Civil Engineering minimum. Strong preference for candidates with field experience, wherever obtained.
We are growing fast and need site engineers who can hit the ground running. You will be responsible for technical delivery on active projects — setting-out, concrete quality, substructure and superstructure works. Experience on government or large residential contracts is a strong advantage. All levels from junior to senior considered.
End-to-end delivery responsibility on government and luxury residential projects. Client interface, programme management, design coordination, commercial oversight and subcontractor management. We are actively looking for PMs at all levels — from assistant PM stepping into their first full delivery role, through to senior professionals with a track record of independent project delivery.
We are looking for a construction planner to support our growing project portfolio. You will prepare, maintain and report on master programmes, look-ahead schedules and delay analysis across multiple live sites. Proficiency in Primavera P6 or MS Project required. Experience with government or infrastructure contracts preferred.
If you are hardworking, reliable, and serious about a career in construction — we want to hear from you, even if your role is not listed above. Benchmark recruits on a rolling basis across Zanzibar, Pemba and mainland Tanzania.
